PA100-D with an Elecraft KX3

Postby KD1NA » 20 Aug 2012 20:45

I have been having lots of success running the Juma linear (PA100-D) with my KX3. I have noticed one problem. On 17 meters and above when using the Auto Frequincy detection, I find on occasion the band readout on the linear flickers to another band during transmittion. An example is when I am on 15 meters sometimes the band indicator on the linear will breafly flicker to the 17 meter readout then return to the 15 meter band. Sometimes when this happens I will get an over current error. It doesn't matter if I am using the antenna or dummy load. If I reduce power to 50 watts out no problem. Running the linear in manual mode also has no problem no matter what power I run and no flickering of the band indicator during transmittion. Any ideas??

PA100D auto band detect is base on input frequency counter. From the SSB signal it is sometimes difficult to decide right frequency range (band). If you have difficulties with auto band it is better to select the band manually and save the PA100D low pass filter switching relays. Switching filters when RF power is on may reduce the relays life.

What kind of selected band indication signal(s) does the KX2 provide?

David,

You may try different drive levels (2.5W-10W) from KX3 and adjust JUMA PA100 gain accordingly to get desired power ouput.
I think this way you will get proper operation of the frequency detection also on 15m and 17m.

When you have tested, pse let me know your findings.

The only outputs from the KX3 other then RF is the keying signal. The KX3 has an RS232 port and does provide band information which is compadable to Elecraft products only.

When I tryed to use 3 watts drive and adjusted thew PA100-D's gain to get output to 100 watts out, I don't seem to have the problem.

PS More information I had a qso with someone in Florida with very good signal. He was running the Flex 5000 and his computer would have the panadaptor display. With me running the KX3 with the Juma linear which is running 70 watts driving a Heathkit SB220 with 1000 watts out he reported a perfectly clean signal. You guys make a well designed product :D

Hi Barry

I do not have a KX3 but I did take some time to read up on it.
Here is your cable.. http://www.nikkemedia.fi/juma-pa100/pa1 ... ection.pdf
Here is your KX3 users manual. http://www.elecraft.com/manual/E740163% ... 20B4sm.pdf
Look at page 5 of the users manual and read up about the ACC1 port.
It looks like one end of the cable has to be configured with the tip as "RX" and ring as "TX".
The other end is reversed.
You should have the KX3 software update for the Juma PA100D installed.
The software is here. http://board.jumaradio.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=131

I hope all of this helps
